The Players of the Year

The Player of the Year is the culmination of this year’s Bank of Scotland Midnight League programme run in 100 communities across all 32 Local authorities in Scotland.

The Scottish FA introduced the new ‘Community Captains’ initiative to the programme this year. Each team was nominated a community captain to provide more responsibility by organising their squad’s attendance, encouraging good behaviours and promoting the sessions on a weekly basis. Many of the players nominated this year are community captains, a clear testament to the success of the programme.

24 young footballers from across Scotland were invited to Hampden Park to be acknowledged for their performance on and off the field, supporting the league in their area, the players and encouraging others to get involved . The players met with professional player and Bank of Scotland Ambassador, Steven Whittaker for a questions and answers session before heading off to get some top tips on the field of play.

Norwich City star Steven Whittaker attended to present the medals and pass on some words of wisdom to the players of the year said: “It is a privilege to have been invited to support the Bank of Scotland Midnight League Player of the Year  and celebrate 24 special players nominated for their commitment to this fantastic programme. It was an honour to meet all the young male and female footballers and I hope that they can keep up all the good work!”
